Ways to work Math into your summer routine;
Note numbers, increase your child’s awareness of numbers by looking around the house to find examples; the kitchen clock, the calendar, the cereal box. Have them write down the numbers he or she sees. Two, four, six, eight, now it’s time to estimate. Estimation is one way to increase a child’s number sense. Before you put a stack of folded towels on a shelf or fill a bowl with peaches, ask your child to estimate how many will fit. How tall are you? Play grocery store Math. The supermarket is an ideal place to use math skills, particularly for older children. Point out that yogurt is $2.59 a six-pack. Ask how much it would cost to buy 3?
Ways to avoid the reading summer slide;
Book Nooks; Most kids have a quiet corner of their own. Even if it’s just a tent fort made from an old blanket and a couple of chairs. Encourage your child to bring books into their special place. Library Visits; Stop by your local public library after work or on the weekend. Librarians are only too happy to recommend books that match interests and reading levels of each child. Reading Recipes; even the pickiest readers like to eat! Why not “read” a recipe out loud and make a treat this weekend?
Science all around us;
Animals, Watch a spider in its web; observe the movements of the animals around you: dogs, cats, squirrels, rabbits, birds; observe birds in their nests and their habitats; watch a caterpillar spin its cocoon and wait until it transforms into a butterfly; look for animal tracks; observe the way ducks animals care for their young. Plants, Plant packaged seeds and observe them grow; plant seeds from fruit and vegetables that you eat; plant an acorn; learn the names of various types of trees and flowers; save waste food as compost; watch flowers bud and blossom.
